Do Your Brakes Need To Be Repaired? Signs To Keep An Eye Out For

Posted on

The brakes are an important part of your car. Without them, you'll move, but stopping is going to be difficult (and could be deadly). You most likely keep a close eye on your gas gauge and your tire pressure and maybe even your oil levels, but when is the last time you actually paid attention to your brakes? Do you pay attention to the signs that your brakes are giving you? If you aren't, you could end up with serious problems, injuries, or worse. Read on for signs to watch out for with your brakes.

Screeching Noises

That screeching or squealing noise you're hearing isn't normal. Any odd noises you've never heard before with your car are usually signs of a problem. The squealing and screeching noises are signs that your brake pads are wearing down and that they need to be changed soon. Waiting too long to change them because you think that noise is going to last for a while is a dangerous game. You could wear down not just the brake pad, but your rotors as well. When this happens, it will make stopping nearly impossible.

Longer Stopping Time

If it's taking you longer to stop your car, it's because your brakes are worn down. If it takes you too long to stop, you could cause an accident and get injured, or you could injure someone else. Your car isn't going to stop on a dime, but it should be able to stop quickly. If it's beginning to feel like you have to stomp on your brakes or like your pedal is going to go through the floor, you should have your brakes checked immediately.

The Brake Light Appears

If your brake light appears, it doesn't mean that you need to have your brakes checked, but you may be low on brake fluid. Brake fluid is what the system uses to apply pressure in order to make the brakes work and enables the car to stop. If you don't have brake fluid in your car, it could cause an issue with stopping. Be sure you have enough brake fluid in your car, and if the light comes on, you should have it checked immediately.

If you aren't sure if you need brakes, you should take your car to a business like Furgerson's Garage to have your brakes inspected. If you are experiencing any of the signs above, take your car into the service center immediately to have the repair completed.
